Conviction and Sentencing of Chinese Master for 2014 Murders Upheld by the Intermediate Appellate Court; Final Appeal to Taiwan Supreme Court

On 18 May 2021, the Taiwan High Court Kaohsiung Branch Court (臺灣高等法院高雄分院) affirmed the conviction of the Chinese-national Wang Fengyu (汪峰裕) to 26 years in prison on four counts of homicide by the court of first instance, the Taiwan Kaohsiung District Court (台灣高雄地方法院), on 29 January 2021.

Wang Fengyu was the acting captain of the Taiwanese fishing vessel Ping Shin No. 101 (屏新101), who ordered his crew to shoot and kill four unarmed individuals off the Somali coast in September 2012. The killing was captured as a video on a mobile phone and came to light in 2014. HRAS provided one of the first translations and analysis of the video footagein August 2014.

The Taiwan High Court Kaohsiung Branch Court is an intermediate appellate court. While it affirmed the original conviction and sentencing by the lower court by dismissing Wang’s appeal, Wang and his legal representation can submit a final appeal to Taiwan’s Supreme Court.
