UAE Government Resolution to help address Abandonment and Seafarers’ Rights

UK.  On 1 July 2021, the UAE Government's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure issued Cabinet Resolution No. (71) of 2021 on 'Marine Wrecks And Violating Ships' as part of its new pathway "to regulate the navigational activities, protection of the marine environment, safety and security of the UAE maritime sector and to protect the rights of seafarers on board ships in UAE waters and ports" detailed by its accompanying Circular. The Resolution was signed-off by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister.

[Updated] Tragic seafarer suicide on asphalt tanker vessel off UAE coast

London. UK. With express permission, it is with great sadness that we report the tragic and premature death of a young seafarer onboard the MT SEA PRINCESS (IMO 8607634), an asphalt bitumen tanker owned by Global tanker Pvt Ltd India and operated by Prime Tankers (UAE), which occurred on the afternoon of 28 January 2021 off the UAE coast. The vessel was en-route with 13 Indian crew from Sharjah to Alang, India, where it is due to be scrapped. The dependents have been informed.

Concerns raised over location of MT Gulf Sky and its 28 Indian crew

London. UK. / Fairhaven. MA. USA. Human Rights at Sea and the Dominica Flag State Administration are increasingly concerned about the change in status of the MV Gulf Sky (IMO 9150377) and its crew, having been informed that the vessel, which was under arrest under a UAE Admiralty Law injunction and had been issued a Prohibition to Sail notice via the Commonwealth of Dominica while anchored off Port Khor Fakkan Anch, had left UAE waters violating both the injunction and the prohibition to sail. At the time of writing, the vessel’s location is unknown with the last AIS signal received eight days ago according to VesselFinder.com.

Seafarer abuse continues with low settlement offers for outstanding wages

This evening Human Rights at Sea was contacted in desperation by a seafarer and Indian national 34-year-old Vikas Mishra from Jaunpur who had previously suffered 35 months and 13 days onboard the UAE flagged MV Tamim Aldar owned by Eliteway Marine Services Ltd without pay and seeing his family in what has been a widely and internationally reported matter.
