London. UK. Following a 48 hour period of ongoing controversy after the UK Home Office suggested that push-backs of migrant boats crossing the English Channel would be used in limited and specific circumstances by UK Border Force vessels to redirect migrants into French territorial waters, the BBC has spoken with Human Rights at Sea to discuss the issue and its ramifications.
“The watershed moment in this situation is truly going to be when vulnerable persons, themselves who have been ruthlessly exploited by criminal gangs on the French mainland drown[s] in front of, or in the vicinity of a UK Government vessel…that is going to be tragic anyway, but even more so if operating in the jurisdiction of UK waters. And therefore the question to be really asked is, what is the risk appetite for the politicians for such media exposure when that happens?”
