At an event organized by Women in Ocean Science (WOS), the trailer for a new IPNLF documentary, The Tuna Truth with Serena Appleby, was shown in Nice at the UN Ocean Conference. The screening and panel were held at the Théâtre de Verdure, a scenic open-air amphitheatre in the heart of the city, on 9 June, 2025.
The Tuna Truth, a concept of the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) in collaboration with the Blue Marine Foundation, the Sustainable Communities and Fisheries Trust, and HRASI instructed to produce the film, follows chef Serena Appleby as she embarks on a journey to uncover the realities of industrial fishing and reveal the secrets of sustainable tuna fishing, while serving up irresistible dishes along the way.
The IPNLF project is set to officially launch in July 2025, with the film scheduled to debut in Autumn 2025.
The trailer was screened alongside other award-winning films and was followed by a panel featuring leading female filmmakers committed to advancing ocean conservation.
The panel included Sara Pipernos (HRASI producer/ director), Helen Sampson (Blue Planet 3 Director and WOS managing director), Mads St. Clair (WOS founder and filmmaker), Tasmin Raine (OCL co-founder and producer), and Martina Tyrepczyk (filmmakers, Tigereyes).
The discussion explored the challenges of producing ocean-centred documentaries and how to balance urgency with messages of hope.
Panelists also reflected on the impact of the female perspective in documentary storytelling and the unique barriers faced by BIPOC women filmmakers in the marine space.
