How can all stakeholders in the maritime supply chain ensure that the issues surrounding human rights at sea are properly and clearly addressed within their day-to-day business activities?

Many companies in the maritime sector are very aware that good business practice requires a proactive approach to the subject of corporate social responsibility (CSR), but many still have questions to ask about how they can engage with the complex subject of human rights in the maritime environment more effectively – across all their business segments and throughout their workforce.

The inaugural International Maritime Human Rights conference will allow maritime companies to engage with leading human rights practitioners and find out why – and how – the concerns surrounding welfare and rights at sea should be at the centre of their CSR strategies.

One of four conference sessions will look at how the interests of business and CSR can work productively with, rather than against each other. Session chair, Margaret Wachenfeld of the Institute for Business and Human Rights, will explain what the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights mean in practice within the maritime environment, while Phil Bloomer of the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre will provide a detailed analysis of how a company’s CSR policy can both reflect and integrate maritime welfare issues.

Alexandra Wrage of TRACE International will discuss human rights concerns as they impact on each element of the maritime supply chain, while Conrad Thorpe of Salama Fikira will focus on the private maritime security industry, providing delegates with his insights gained from negotiating the release of many seafarers held hostage in extreme situations.

The International Maritime Human Rights conference is providing a unique and unbiased platform for maritime stakeholders and human rights advocates to come together and discuss the important and multi-faceted subject of human rights at sea.
